A Favorite Resort of Destination Skiers.

Alta, Utah, became a ski area in the winter season of 1938–39; it installed its first lift just two years after Sun Valley, Idaho. Over the years, the resort grew slowly, building new lifts as the number of skiers steadily increased.

Today, Alta has a reputation for its epic scenery, diverse terrain, and for the uncanny quality of the snow it receives season after season. Its slopes are “just for skiers”—off limits to all other types of winter recreation. Because it is a watershed, no mechanized vehicles are allowed. And it is one of only three winter-sports areas in the United States that do not allow snowboarding. Their outdoor advertising tells you something about the trails:

Not fun? Ridiculous? Well, Greg, that depends on how well you ski. Let’s use the word “challenging.” For true winter sports cognoscenti, a week at Alta/Snowbird sounds like a Christmas present from fairy godmother. Besides, just 55 percent of the runs are considered “advanced.” But we like the messaging; that’s some terrific advertising. Nick’s and Gerald’s condo is in The Village at Sugarplum, a lovely mountain-cottage complex near the Alta slopes, set amid towering pine and aspen trees.

The Village at Sugarplum is a 30-minute drive from the Salt Lake International Airport—easily accessible from both U.S. Coasts and Europe. It has stunning views of the Alta/Snowbird resorts and Mt. Superior in Utah’s Wasatch mountain range. The world-class ski areas of Park City, Deer Valley, Sundance, and The Canyons – hosts to Alpine events during the 2002 Winter Olympics—are all under 45 minutes away.

GREAT ALL AROUND!

“Our condo was ski-in/out with beautiful views. The condo was comfortable, functional and well stocked without being indulgent. The staff at Canyon Services was very helpful and got groceries, etc. for us; made sure we had everything we needed and accommodated special requests.”
